Jamie Gwynmorgan doesn’t believe in prayer. She doesn’t believe in anything much. Except that people can’t be trusted—certainly not anyone she’s ever met.
But Jamie knows some things. From experience. She knows if she died, nobody would give a damn. Nobody would even notice. She knows the better she can fight, the safer she’ll be. That’s why she can’t resist the sleek, dark lethality of the weapon—and the recruiter’s promise that yes, if she’s strong enough, good enough, she’ll get to fire that weapon in combat. She doesn’t care about the uniform. And screw the pretend-camaraderie. Only Safe matters—and if she can do combat, then maybe she can fight her way to Safe.
Jamie expects a grueling fight that she might lose. What she never expects is to win love.

For a first-time publication, the author has created a tour de force. This book is a young woman's journey to hell and back. Jamie's rite of passage is costly. The writing is so intelligent, realistic, and gut wrenching at times that you feel as if you are right there, taking the journey with this courageous yet vulnerable protagonist.Kell Hagin has done her homework and gives us a fully developed plot which also parallels the price being paid by our wounded warriors today on foreign soil.
Jamie is a reluctant hero. She is searching to find herself, to find meaning in the midst of chaos and despair. She finds much more when Senator Lynn Hillinger takes her under her wing.
My review is short because all the previously well written reviews have already shown what an impressive piece of writing this is. WGMB has become one of my favorite novels.
Discover Jamie. Travel with her. And then complete the journey in the sequel, Shadows of Something Real. You will be the richer for it.

Whatever Gods May Be edition by Sophia Kell Hagin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Whatever Gods May Be is an interesting tale. Our heroine goes through some really stressful hell as she progresses from civilian to Marine, and beyond. Once I got into it, the book was very hard to put down. Can't say I'd like to read it again, but it was definitely a worthwhile first read.
The book starts with 17 year old Marine recruit, Jamie Gwynmorgan entering training and from there going on to become a decorated, and seasoned warrior. It was a powerful book, and offered unique insight into military life. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book and enjoyed every second of it. I reccommend keeping a computer close by though, because some unfamiliar military terms appear. It's a must-read for anyone even associated with the military.
This was an awesome book. Even though it is set in the near future (cool toys), it has that timeless quality. This is about all War-the horror-the cruelty-the futility. The writing is graphic but not for shock purposes. I love that the women soldiers are in the front as a matter of course. I love strong women and Jamie is incredibly tough. This is not light reading but it is well worth the effort. This book and these characters have stayed with me even though I finished it weeks ago. I am absolutely going to be purchasing any future books by this author. Well Done!
Jamie Gwynmorgan is a very special character. After you read this book, you won't forget her.
When she hits 17 she leaves Cape Cod behind and joins the Marine Corp.Weeks of hell are followed by more weeks of hell. Then she's off to war.
I was right there with her because Sophia Hogin does such a good job of describing Jamie's life. You're able to feel her fear, confusion, loneliness and all the hard work she puts into learning to survive .
This is the kind of book I hope more lesbian fiction will become. The detail of military life and the training and planning for missions was incredible. The action scenes will leave you exhausted and the heartbreak will make you cry.
Make sure you read it.
Thanks,Sophia
Pat
This is an amazing book, and I refused to put it down until I finished it, house chores be damned! I'm looking forward to reading the next installment. I do not understand how anyone could it this book less than a 5 star rating!
This book is not beautifully written nor does it have an original storyline. And yet I was compelled to read this to the end,and I am really glad I did. In this first book a thin layer of melancholy lies within Jamie from the start to finish. I am not sure what attracted me. A lonely, angsty (not brooding) girl of nothing growing up to be a accomplished military officer respected (and maybe loved) by many? Tales of friendship and good old camaraderie? All those glorious guns blazing scenes? Whatever it may be I look forward to reading the next chapter of Jamie's story. I hope she finds peace and happiness.
Excellent story! This is the story of 17 year old Jamie who after her druggie mother dies, enlists in The Marines. Jamie turns out to be an excellent marksman and is offered scout/snipe school. And so the story takes off running. From trudging through the jungle to scaling mountains we follow young Jamie through a conflict as she rises through the ranks to a POW camp where she endures too many horrible things. That's all I'll say of the storyline, but I could not put this book down, as I had to see her off a ridge, through an assignment. Jamie sees more by the time she is 19 than most of us will see in an entire lifetime. Even though this is a fictional story, it made me appreciate our veterans more.
