Everyone in Magnolia Springs is soon abuzz about the proprietors of the New Castle Gift Shop as it becomes apparent that something is unsettling about Mr. and Mrs. Aliger. A power company lineman, a police sergeant and a number of otherwise mild-mannered, country-fried characters try their hands at interpreting the strange actions and unusual behavior of their new neighbors. Things become curiouser and curiouser as the Aligers set up shop and begin making their rounds amongst the locals. Just why have they come to Magnolia Springs and what is on their hidden agenda? Could it be that the fate of the entire world might lie in the hands of a few unsuspecting souls in a sleepy little Texas Town?

I read this book months ago and neglected to write a review. Hopefully this will make up for that error! The Misguided Souls of Magnolia Springs is a WONDERFUL book. So wonderful, in fact, that I'm getting ready to read it for the second time.
Writing is not my strength, but I wanted to say that Ms. Darnell captured the feeling of small town life quite well. When newcomers move to town they are a source of curiosity, and these particular newcomers are VERY mysterious! As I read this book I felt like I knew some of these characters personally, as though Ms. Darnell had come to the town I grew up in and written about some of my neighbors. I'm quite sure that anyone who grew up in a small town will feel the same way!
There are times when I need a book that will leave a smile on my face when I finish that last page. This is one of those books.

The Misguided Souls of Magnolia Springs edition by Olivia Darnell Brendan Carroll Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this book and its concept, but I did not like the length and some of the duller parts could have been omitted. Over all a great idea, and great characters. I especially loved Peregrin and Angelica. Some editing may have eliminated the lengthiness and made it a bit more readable, but a great start to what looks to me to be a great writer's career.
I really wanted to like this book; I know of the author from another Forum that I am on, but I found it difficult to read.
It has an interesting premise and story line, but I found the book to be badly in need of editing. With good editing it could be shorter by 1/3.
A lot of the dialogue was redundant, and the character development was uneven.
I could not really recommend this book for those reasons, though I did finish it to find out what happened in the end. It does provide some fodder for thought, which was its redemption, and why I gave it two stars instead of one.
Perry and his wife Angelica engage in several philosophical discourses of which they never seem to agree. This new-to-Magnolia Springs-couple arrive with a mission and that seems to be to either prove or disprove something about human character.
I've read 36% of this book in kindle format and I got to tell ya, tiresome is the first word that comes to mind after the initial few to several chapters.
This soul searching novel is an interesting look into the lives of others and what makes them happy. A bit confusing near the end, but a brilliant twist pulls it all together.
I bought this book because it was recommended by Red Adept. I'm glad I did, I enjoyed the book and I would recommend it to others.
Although I feel it could have been a tad bit shorter, it was well written, had very interesting characters and the plot moved well.
Overall 4 3/4 Stars
Plot/Storyline 4 Stars
The plot was an original idea and fairly unique in its execution. This is a difficult book to review as far as plot and storyline as I don't want to give any spoilers.
The book starts out with a few intriguing opening scenes that really made me want to keep reading. The storyline did progress pretty nicely, albeit at a slow pace, after those scenes. However, there were way too many extraneous scenes, sometimes entire chapters, that did not forward the storyline at all and just seemed to be added for speculation among the locals. There was plenty of speculating going on in the chapters that did forward the storyline without adding more.
The exceptional storyline did make plodding through these extra chapters worth my time. I just had to discover what was going on with the new neighbors, the Aligers.
My favorite parts of the story were the scenes where Perry Aliger gets confused with all of the English 'sayings.' These scenes really made me think about how often we say things without thinking of the literal meanings of the words.
Character Development 5 Stars
Ms. Darnell excels at character development. Her novel is peopled with truly unique individuals. Each character has depth and is completely different in both personality and circumstances from every other.
There was a lot of imagination and thought put into each character. Ms. Darnell knows how to make the reader care about the characters and what happens to them.
Perry was one of my favorite characters, mostly stemming from what I mentioned above regarding his confusing with English colloquialisms.
Writing Style 5 Stars
The writing style was superb. The book was filled with imaginative analogies and appropriate metephors. Ms. Darnell's command of the English language was evident in every sentence, without being overbearing. The sentence structure made for a nice, even flow to the reading experience. The descriptions were vivid, and the dialogue was like any conversation you would hear on the street or in your own house.
Formatting/Editing 4 3/4 Stars
There were some editing errors sprinkled throughout the novel, but none that would hinder the reading process.
The formatting was of professional quality.
Rating PG for Adult Situations
Ms. Darnell's wonderful book is such a breath of fresh air. The characters are eccentric and unique, and seeing the world through Peregrin "Perry" Aliger's eyes is not like looking through rose-colored glasses...it's like strapping two telescopes to your eyes and viewing the galaxy. Through her creative descriptions, Ms. Darnell paints vivid pictures that you carry with you long after putting the book down. She makes you look at your neighbors differently and she revitalizes the way you regard relationships.
I thoroughly recommend this book, and absolutely can't wait till Ms. Darnell's next one comes out!!
